Making Learning Visible: Observation and Documentation

The Reggio Emilia Approach, an educational project

Pedagogical documentation is a fundamental working tool and strategy for teachers, seeking to make visible and understand what takes place during pedagogical work, how much, and what, children know and can do.

Documentation is a process of shared observation and interpretation.

Why should we document? How can we document? What is the relationship between observation, interpretation, and documentation?

To document is to try and give voice to children and their thinking, to try and show a learning process as it takes place, through an understanding born of trying to relate to another.

Considered in this light documentation is both content and process, a tool of evaluation and self-evaluation, a tool to be evaluated and self-evaluated.
